The $19-million McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI) opened for business in May 2001. The MMRI is one of the largest university manufacturing research institutes in Canada, supporting academic programs that equal and surpass those found anywhere.
Industry experts consider the MMRI to be Canada's most advanced and best-equipped manufacturing research laboratory.
Founded by Dr. Mo Elbestawi, now McMaster's vice-president of Research and International Affairs, and directed by Dr. Stephen Veldhuis, the 15,000-sq.-ft. facility houses 13 industrial machines and a robot, and is designed to meet the sophisticated research and development needs of leading manufacturers in the polymer, automotive and aerospace industries, as well as the tool, die and mold industry.
